I started with the 4GB model and upgraded to 8 since it is much cheaper to DIY. I have 8GB and I plan on putting 16GB of ram into this and since my work is not processor-intensive, this hardware should be solid to use for work for years. I can unplug it and get some things done for a while without having to fret about getting back to a power outlet, which is what should be expected of a laptop.the unibody design is durable and attractive.the last generation of "upgradeable" macbooks, evidently.

The reason for the switch was that for the past year I have been working full time as a web developer working on Ubuntu, and dual-booting into Windows for gaming and whatnot, but the latest OS versions in the Linux world have dropped support for the specific hardware (namely the Radeon Mobile 4670 GPU) on that laptop and I was beginning to run into more and more trouble with compatibility issues that interfered with my work productivity enough to justify buying a newer, better-supported, more reliable machine to work from. I used that machine for about 4 years before switching to this Macbook Pro.

After that G4 reached its last leg, I bought a Dell Studio XPS 1640 and was pleased to have a serious machine again. The time I spent with the Powerbook gave me an appreciation for the good things Apple was doing but it was such an old and underpowered machine that I was never able to do more than very restricted workflows with it. This is overall the nicest machine I've ever had, but it still certainly has flaws and compromises.Brief background: I used an old handed-down Powerbook G4 for several years after my primary home-built desktop gaming machine reached its age limit and I needed to switch to something portable as a traveling musician.
